Dracaena sanderiana ‘Gold’, often marketed as “Lucky Bamboo,” is a popular ornamental plant known for its attractive, slender stems and vibrant golden-yellow variegated foliage. Despite its common name, it is not a true bamboo but belongs to the Asparagaceae family, closely related to other Dracaena species. The ‘Gold’ cultivar features bright yellow or cream-colored stripes or margins along the edges of its lance-shaped leaves, adding a cheerful and contrasting element to its appearance. It is widely grown as an indoor plant and is often styled in various arrangements, including spirals, braids, and tiered formations, believed to bring good luck and positive energy according to Feng Shui principles.   

Lucky Bamboo ‘Gold’ is relatively low-maintenance and adaptable to indoor conditions. It can be grown in soil or simply in water with pebbles to support the stems. When grown in water, it’s essential to change the water regularly (every one to two weeks) to keep it fresh and prevent the buildup of algae. If planted in soil, it prefers well-draining potting mix and should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry. It thrives in low to bright indirect light, but direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. This plant is sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water, so using filtered or distilled water is recommended for optimal growth and health.
